Introduction to Bacs

Operated by Pay.uk, Bacs is the UK’s bulk payment system used to process domestic GBP direct debits and credit transfers.

Mambu Payments is a Bacs approved bureau, able to automate the submission of Bacs payment instructions and the collection of Bacs reports.

Information required to initiate Bacs payments

To be able to send Bacs direct debit or direct credit instructions, an institution must:

  1. Have a legal entity in the UK
  2. Have a sponsor bank (Bacs payment participating bank) issuing a debit or credit Service User Number (SUN), and have UK accounts used to settle the funds
  3. Choose a Bacs approved bureau like Mambu Payments or use a Bacs approved software provider (i.e. Bacstel-IP software) to submit files and collect reports

Bacs direct debit flows in Mambu Payments

As a Bacs bureau, Mambu Payments supports the following Bacs direct debit flows:

  1. Register Bacs direct debit mandates as a service user
  2. Be notified when direct debit mandates are canceled or amended
  3. Send direct debit payment instructions after mandates were successfully registered
  4. Be notified when direct debit payment instructions are returned
  5. Be notified when direct debit indemnity claims are received
